Celebrating 5 Years of Impactful Change!

Creating a better future for aquatic animals

‘4R’ APPROACH TO SEAFOOD SYSTEM REFORM

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ utilizes 4 fundamental approaches to enact formative change within the global seafood system. Through our primary streams of activity across the supply chain, advocacy pursuits are identified and executed according to one or more of the following principles:

  1. Reduce the number of animals in, or remove animals from, the seafood system and its supply chain.

  2. Refine the conditions in which animals are currently kept or captured in the seafood system and its supply chain.

  3. Replace animal products with sustainable plant-based or cell-based alternatives to the extent possible in the seafood system and its supply chain.

  4. Reject the introduction of additional animals into the seafood system and its supply chain.

OUR MISSION

To reduce the suffering of the trillions of aquatic animals being farmed and caught in the wild for human consumption each year.

WHY °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥?

Up to 2-3 trillion wild caught fish, 100 billion farmed fish, and 350-400 billion farmed shrimp are killed globally each year.

The approximate 500 billion farmed aquatic animals live in high-suffering conditions, and to date, there is negligible advocacy aimed at improving aquatic animal welfare.

Fish feel pain, emotion, and have impressive cognitive abilities, and more research is emerging to prove the same for other aquatic animals. Policies and seafood certifications must include high welfare standards for aquatic animals in farms and marine capture fisheries.

Help us advocate for aquatic animals and join the movement today!

OUR PILLARS

Certifier Campaign

Aquatic animal product certifying bodies are starting to add welfare standards to their labelling programs, so °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ is stepping in to help define a high welfare product (both in aquaculture and in wild capture fisheries).

Coalition Building

We unite nonprofits, academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and the public with the common goal of reducing aquatic animal suffering. Through coordinated and collaborative work, together we achieve more for the animals.

Policy Initiatives

Our policy work involves engaging the E.U., FAO, and other international organisations, participating in forums and conferences, to influence changes in policies on an international scale. We also use our coalition work to capitalise on policy opportunities and to form unified asks. Creating legislative change requires a collaborative approach.

Research

The research team at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ identifies priority areas where research will advance our advocacy efforts. ALI uses this research to support certifying bodies in creating high welfare aquatic animal products, and to support our own efforts in influencing legislative change.

AQUATIC ANIMAL ALLIANCE

We are proud to spearhead the Aquatic Animal Alliance, a historic new global coalition that believes aquatic animals should have lives free of suffering. Founded in 2020, AAA is modeled after , , and other powerful coalition groups who have demonstrated we are strongest when we work together. Through this coalition, we are teaming up with other animal protection organizations across six continents to collectively address the issues facing trillions of aquatic animals.
